Tino Livramento: Newcastle set to lose star man as contract talks stall

Tino Livramento’s contract talks with Newcastle United are stalling amid their uncertainty around qualifying for European competition this season.

Livramento’s season has been blighted by recurring injury issues that have restricted him to 12 Premier League starts so far.

He was a standout for the Magpies last term as he helped them to Carabao Cup success and Champions League qualification, and has impressed when he has been available so far in 2025-26.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Livramento looks increasingly likely to leave Newcastle this summer as new contract talks continue to stall.

Eddie Howe wants him to stay for next season, but failure to qualify for any European competition could mean that Newcastle’s transfer plans involve signing a replacement for Livramento.

Arsenal and Man City have each been linked to Livramento in recent months, and he impressed when starting for England against Uruguay on Friday evening.

The right-back is under contract at Newcastle for another two years, but he is only likely to sign a new bumper deal if they make Europe this season, which currently looks unlikely as they sit 12th in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Livramento is a top player, obviously he’s had his injury problems this season as well, but when he has played, he’s one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.

“So it’s no surprise that there’s interest from Arsenal, obviously we know Manchester City are long-term admirers of Livramento and see him as a potential player who can come in and slot in at right back for them.

“He’s under contract until 2028. There has been talks over a new deal but nothing agreed as yet.

“Newcastle, they don’t want to lose their top players, but I think obviously as those contract talks drag on and they find themselves out of European football for next season, they’re probably bracing themselves for interest for the likes of Livramento and others.”

Newcastle could offer new deal to Kieran Trippier amid Livramento uncertainty

Trippier has been called upon much more than he would have expected in recent months at Newcastle due to Livramento’s injury woes.

The 35-year-old has made 34 appearances so far this season, and is approaching the end of his contract with the club as it stands.

With Livramento’s future uncertain, sources have exclusively told Football Insider that Trippier could be offered a new deal soon.

He is believed to be open to staying at St James’ Park for another season at least, but as with most of their current predicaments, a final decision likely rests on potential European qualification.
