Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has said he is sure that Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on the progress of loanee Adam Armstrong after his recent red hot form.
The 21-year-old striker arrived at the League One side in the January window after leaving Championship side Bolton Wanderers, where he had spent the first half of the season, and after struggling with the Trotters, has come to life at Ewood Park.
The graduate of Newcastle’s youth system has scored seven goals in as many games to help Rovers keep their advantage as league leaders in England’s third tier, and Mowbray has delivered a rave review of the hot prospect.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “He’s a young lad learning the game, and I’m sure Rafa Benitez will see the video clips of all of the goals he’s scoring.
“He also works extraordinarily hard, it’s not as though he’s a striker who just stands there. I’ll look forward to him scoring many more goals.
“With all respect to League One, his attributes and quality, his ability to score with both feet, mean he’s better than League One I’d suggest.”
Armstrong has made 21 appearances for Newcastle’s senior side but has failed to nail down a place in the first team, and is contracted on Tyneside until 2020.
Football Insider verdict
The Premier League seems to be the only division from England’s top three where the Magpies do not have someone showing off incredible goal scoring form. Aleksandar Mitrovic has rediscovered his touch in the Championship, and Armstrong is looking like the top prospect he was with Rovers. Will he be handed a chance next season? It all depends on how he performs in the summer break, with there likely to be new reinforcements arriving when the transfer window opens. Newcastle fans will be hoping he can impress for it has been too long since they saw anyone break through the youth ranks, plus they desperately need a goal scorer up front.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club must make a move for a £20million striker available in summer.
