Tonali, Guimaraes react to ‘wont forget’ message from Newcastle ace Jacob Murphy

Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes reacted to a message from Newcastle teammate Jacob Murphy on social media.

On the final day of the season, England target Eddie Howe‘s side reclaimed their place amongst Europe’s elite, confirming Champions League qualification despite losing 1-0 to Everton.

Newcastle were the beneficiaries of a horrendous refereeing decision in Aston Villa’s 2-0 loss to Man United, as Morgan Rogers’ goal was disallowed before hitting the back of the net.

This meant VAR was unable to intervene, and former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett told Football Insider exclusively that Howard Webb was “careless” for failing to appoint a more experienced referee for the match.

But with Champions League football worth in the region of £80-100million [BBC Sport], Newcastle are now well-placed to strengthen their side this summer.

Jacob Murphy sends message to Newcastle fans

Having enjoyed the most fruitful season of his career, Murphy shared a montage of his best moments on Instagram, captioned: “24/25 the streets won’t forget.”

The caption makes reference to the online trend in which fans reminisce on brilliant seasons enjoyed by players who are not necessarily household names.

Showing their support for the 30-year-old’s brilliant season, in which Murphy scored eight and assisted 12 goals, Guimaraes and Tonali liked the post from the Englishman.

Jacob Murphy form gives Newcastle difficult question to answer this summer

Football Insider Verdict

Heading into the 2024/25 season, right-wing appeared to be the most glaring weakness in Howe’s starting XI, and one that would need addressing the following season.

Miguel Almiron’s performances had been trending downwards and whilst Murphy had been a reliable understudy, the Englishman had never wowed when starting.

But following the culmination of this campaign, it could be argued that behind Alexander Isak and Guimaraes, there have been no better performers in a black and white shirt.

Newcastle hold a long-standing interest in Bryan Mbeumo, but replacing Murphy now would seem counterproductive, given his fine form.

However, at 30 years old there will be questions as to whether the winger can replicate his performances next season, especially as the Magpies are no strangers to purple patches from their wingers, as evidenced by Almiron’s spectacular form, then fall-off, in the 2022/23 season.
