'Top business' - Exclusive: Pundit reacts as Rangers agree to sell star & net '£500K profit'

Alan Hutton has hailed the sale of Matt Polster to New England Revolution for a “£500,000 profit” as excellent business from Rangers.

The former Rangers and Scotland star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the right-back struggled due to a lack of game time thanks to James Tavernier being almost guaranteed a place in the starting XI.

Rangers confirmed on Wednesday evening that they have accepted an offer for the 27-year-old and that he will be heading back to the MLS this summer.

Polster, a USA international, arrived in Glasgow on a free transfer back in January 2019 after leaving Chicago Fire.

However, Hutton believes the fierce competition at right-back meant he was never able to get into his stride under Steven Gerrard.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s a difficult one to speak about because it was a little bit odd – you had Tavernier, you had Flanagan and obviously Polster coming in, he’s not really had that many opportunities in terms of goals and assists – just one I can think of.

“It’s been difficult for him and I know how difficult it can be, you need a run of games in the team, you can’t just come in for one, out for five.

“The other hurdle was that Tavernier is the captain, he’s one of their main players and it was going to be difficult to oust him out the team. He was fighting a losing battle so I do feel for him. If Rangers are making half a million on moving him on, it’s a top bit of business”

Polster made just 10 appearances across all competitions for the Gers, with all but one of those coming during the 2019/20 season.

He started Rangers’ last league match, a 1-0 win over Ross County, while he also played five minutes in the club’s last game against Bayer Leverkusen.
