Top-flight manager responds to reported Rangers interest after Caixinha axe

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has refused to be drawn into talking about reports that Rangers are interested in snapping him up to replace Pedro Caixinha.

The Portuguese boss was axed by the Gers board on Thursday following a spate of poor results in his seven months in charge, which has led the Scottish Sun to report that McInnes is now the Ibrox club’s No 1 target to fill the vacancy.

It is understood that Rangers could make a move for the 46-year-old Pittodrie boss as soon as Monday as they look to stump up a potential £1.5million compensation fee.

McInnes turned down a move from the Scottish top-flight to English Championship side Sunderland in the summer before signing a three-year deal with the Dons.

Now, the ex-Rangers midfielder has admitted that he is happy with his current situation at Pittodrie and is instead full focused on his side’s Premiership fixture this weekend.

“I’ve never been drawn on speculation in the past and I’m very happy here and concentrating on Ross County,” he said, as quoted by Aberdeen’s official Twitter account on Friday.

McInnes has presided over one of the best spells in Aberdeen’s recent history, finishing third and achieving two runners-up spots in his three full seasons in charge.

The Dons haven’t experienced that kind of success since the 1980s and early 1990s, which leads him to be a clear favourite with the majority of the fan base to fill the managerial vacancy at Ibrox.
