Top-level Liverpool overhaul on the cards after 'strange' news - pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Liverpool may be “looking in a different direction” ahead of Michael Edwards’ departure as sporting director.

The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it was “strange” for the 42-year-old to step down without having a future move lined up.

Liverpool announced last week (10th November) Edwards would leave his post at the end of the season.

Julian Ward, the Reds’ current assistant sporting director, will step up into the senior role.

Hutton admitted it would be a shame to see Edwards depart Anfield after a period of great success.

He suggested the Reds may look to shake things up and change tactics to keep things fresh for Jurgen Klopp and his men.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I always think it’s a bit strange when it’s a case of they’re not going somewhere else, when they’re just leaving.

“You wonder if his time’s just kind of come to an end and they’re looking in a different direction.

“He’s done excellent for the football club. You just look at some of the players he’s helped bring in. He’s really helped transform Liverpool.

“I think it’s obviously worked, it’s been a good partnership. It’ll be a shame to see him go. This is football, things pop up, things change, there are a lot of moving parts.”

Edwards, who previously worked at Tottenham, joined Liverpool back in 2011 as the head of analytics.

He took on his current role back in 2016.
