Report: Tottenham bid to remove Alderweireld clause hits stumbling block, big Levy challenge

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham’s bid to tie Toby Alderweireld down to a new contract have hit a major stumbling block, according to a report.

The Evening Standard claim Spurs are keen to add the centre-back to their long list of key players who are committed to long-term deals.

But it is said that negotiations have stalled over Alderweireld’s wage demands as he holds out for a salary that will put him on a par with £100,000-a-week top earners Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.

The Standard report that Spurs want to secure a fresh agreement with the Belgium international that removes the £25million release clause in his current deal.

It was leaked last year that the clause would become active in the summer of 2019, when Alderweireld will be 30.

For the player’s part, he is reportedly keen on an increase on his current £50,000-a-week package, which places him well behind not only Kane and Lloris but most of the Tottenham first team.

Other high earners, like Mousa Dembele, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Christian Eriksen are all in the £60,000-a-week to £75,000-a-week bracket.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is in charge of negotiating transfers and contracts, now faces a challenge to find common ground with Alderweireld.

Levy took time to secure the signatures of Kane, Lloris and Eriksen, to name three, but all the deals got done in the end.
