Tottenham are sorting two outfield positions as Romero talks confirmed - Hutton

Alan Hutton has suggested Tottenham could kill two birds with one stone by signing Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender suggested the 23-year-old could solve problems at both centre-back and right-back.

As quoted by Football Italia, Atalanta CEO Gianluca Percassi has confirmed the two clubs are in talks over a potential transfer.

Football.London reported yesterday (19th July) that Spurs were in discussions with the Italian outfit for Romero and goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Romero is currently on a two-year loan from Juventus, where he was signed by Spurs’ director of football Fabio Paratici.

However, Atalanta are said to be considering triggering their option to buy a year early to sell him onto Tottenham.

Ex-Spurs defender Alan Hutton was enthusiastic about the potential move.

“Paratici signed him for Juventus in 2019 so he will know exactly what he is getting”, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“It’s definitely an area where Tottenham have to improve. They need someone to come in with experience, which Romero has despite being such a young boy.

“It’s good to see the club actively working and working quickly to identify areas that need improvement.

“Romero can also play at right-back, which is another area which needs strengthening.”

The Atalanta star received the Serie A defender of the year award for the 2020/21 campaign.

The 23-year-old is fresh from winning the Copa America with Argentina.

He managed to make three appearances at the tournament.
