Tottenham ‘brace for Brennan Johnson offer’ after Crystal Palace news

Tottenham are preparing to receive offers for Brennan Johnson ahead of the January transfer window and could be prepared to let him leave.

That is according to former Tottenham and Man United senior scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at his previous clubs, as he exclusively told Football Insider that both loan and permanent offers will be considered by Spurs.

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old in recent weeks, as they target attacking reinforcements to bolster Oliver Glasner‘s side.

The Wales international has featured 19 times under Thomas Frank, with 10 of those appearances coming from the start, but questions linger about his long-term role.

Frank is believed to prefer other names in Johnson’s position, while the potential returns of both Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski could push him down the pecking order.

Tottenham brace to receive offers for Brennan Johnson

Tottenham have been left concerned by Johnson’s performances in recent weeks and could consider letting him leave should the right offer arrive in January.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Spurs will weigh up the winger’s future based on whether he figures in Frank’s plans.

Johnson has become a bit of a misfit at Tottenham,” he told Football Insider.

“He never seems to have quite managed to establish himself there for whatever reason, and now he’s in and out of the side again under Frank.

“I’m not sure whether he’s the type of forward who suits Tottenham, because he is more of a forward than he is a winger in my opinion.

“He’s not the type who’s going to get on the ball, beat his man and put a cross into the area, and I think that’s why there are players ahead of him at Tottenham.

“But then the question becomes, is he good enough as a forward to put himself in that conversation for Tottenham, and the answer is I don’t think so.

“That’s not to say he won’t be good enough for another team or another way of playing, and that’s why I think there will be offers for him when the window opens.

“I’m sure Tottenham will consider those offers, and if they receive one they think is good enough, I expect they will be prepared to let him go.

“It could be on loan, or it could be permanent, because both of those would suit Tottenham for different reasons, so it will depend on the buying club and what they’re after.”

Thomas Frank’s January transfer plans revealed

Despite ongoing speculation about potential departures including Johnson, Spurs are expected to look to bolster Frank’s squad in the January transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 25 November that Tottenham are planning to sign a new striker alongside the addition of a winger when the window opens.

A number of potential options are being considered in both positions, with the club’s recruitment team working to identify improvements to their squad.

Football Insider revealed on 7 December that Tottenham are monitoring Jean-Philippe Mateta as he is now expected to leave Crystal Palace in the near future.

This comes as Crystal Palace may be forced to sell Mateta after their contract talks with the France international stalled over wage disagreements.
