Tottenham 'certain to be shopping' for Alessandro Bastoni as pundit digs deeper

Tottenham are “certain” to sign a new centre back in January with Alessandro Baston near the top of their wishlist.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ January plans.

According to The Sun (9 November), Tottenham remain keen on signing Bastoni, who they chased in the summer of 2022.

This site revealed on 25 May that Spurs identified the 23-year-old, as their first-choice left-sided centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, a deal was not completed and Spurs instead signed Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

McManus is backing Spurs to sign Bastoni in January after looking at the club’s defensive record.

“I’m just looking at their defensive record, it’s really, really poor,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“They have conceded 21 goals in 15 games. Now, when you consider that West Ham and Everton have only conceded 17 and they are sitting in 16th and 17th, then it shows how poor they have been.

“They are very fortunate to score the goals that they have. They have to go and strengthen the centre-half position in January.

“I am certain they will be shopping for a top defender and Bastoni is brilliant. A seasoned international and someone who would come in and instantly improve that defence.

“They can’t keep conceding that amount of goals it’s unsustainable. The defence is having an off day every week, when the strikers have a bad game then they will definitely lose.”

Lenglet has made 14 total appearances for Spurs.

He started his new side’s last four league games before the World Cup break.
