Tottenham coach had this to say about Edwards after comeback
By Harry Sykes
Tottenham coach Ugo Ehiogu has revealed Marcus Edwards is feeling no ill effects after making his long-awaited comeback for the club on Sunday.
The teenage playmaker has been sidelined since October with an ankle injury and has been robbed of the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular place in the senior squad.
But he made his comeback at lunchtime on Sunday as he was selected in a strong starting XI for the club’s Under-23s against Liverpool at Anfield.
Edwards marked his return to action with a superbly taken goal with his favourite left foot to open the scoring, and Nathan Oduwa soon doubled the visitors’ advantage.
But Harry Wilson pulled one back from the penalty spot for the Liverpool young guns before second-half goals from Sheyi Ojo and Kevin Stewart secured the win for the hosts in the Premier League 2 clash.
Edwards played 59 minutes of the match in what Under-23s manager Ehiogu felt was a major boost for the club.
“It’s disappointing when you score two goals away from home and end up losing 3-2, that’s a massive momentum change in a game,” said Ehiogu, as quoted by the official Tottenham website.
“We started well but then switched off, allowed them to have a spell of pressure, conceded a penalty and that’s the game-changer. It’s frustrating, the ups and downs.
“There is a lot to work on but we’ll get this out of our system and try to be better next time. Marcus Edwards scored a good goal and came through unscathed, so that’s another positive.”
The young playmaker, who turned 18 in December, has a burgeoning reputation at White Hart Lane and is widely hailed as the most exciting of the next generation of talent emerging from within the club.
Edwards was with the Spurs first team that beat Middlesbrough on Saturday and disembarked from the team coach that arrived at White Hart Lane shortly before kick-off.
But the teenager was omitted from the matchday squad for the Premier League clash as Mauricio Pochettino instead preferred to name two other academy products Josh Onomah and Cameron Carter-Vickers as substitutes.
Both were not give any game time on Saturday and joined Edwards in the side that lost to Liverpool’s youngsters 24 hours later.
