Tottenham contract rebel warned by manager over last eight PL games, could lead to huge fallout
Toby Alderweireld has been warned that his World Cup spot is in doubt this summer if he doesn’t play a big part in Tottenham’s last eight games.
Talking in the Guardian after the 2-0 win against Saudi Arabia, Belgium’s manager Roberto Martinez said: “Every player needs to get a really good period of football now.
“Seven weeks is not a lot of time. Certain players that play a lot of minutes, the playing time now is not essential. But other players who have not played that much, and Toby can be one of those – it is important.”
These words are likely to bring a huge pressure point between player and club manager in the final few games of the season.
At first glance it seems like Martinez making mischief again.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino won’t have been too happy that Martinez went public from the Belgium camp to say that Alderweireld was completely fit and fine to play.
That rather flies in the face of everything the Tottenham manager has been saying.
And Martinez’s last comments will make Pochettino’s job at Spurs that bit more difficult.
So far Alderweireld has toed the club line. He hasn’t broken cover and said what’s happening behind the scenes.
But he will be desperate to play in the World Cup finals this summer and if he isn’t played on Sunday he’ll be asking some very serious questions on Monday morning.
If Pochettino isn’t playing him because of his refusal to sign a new contract, it’s time to come clean and put all the fans out of their misery.
If it’s because he knows something about his fitness that Martinez doesn’t then he should come clean.
If he continues not playing Alderweireld then we’d expect things to get ugly and the player himself could decide to go public and blow the lid off what’s really going on in north London.
Pochettino can do no wrong in the eyes of Tottenham fans – could this be the first chink in his armour?
