Tottenham could sign next Ryan Sessegnon after source’s talks update – expert

Paul Robinson has claimed Middlesbrough wing-back Djed Spence is not ready to be a regular starter for Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one does not believe the 21-year-old would make “a huge difference” to Antonio Conte’s side next season.

Spurs are in the market for a right wing-back this summer.

A recruitment source told Football Insider (23 May) that the Lilywhites have opened preliminary talks over a deal for Djed Spence.

The right-back has excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest this season and will be lining up for them in the Championship play-off final on Sunday.

Robinson suspects Spence would have a follow a similar path to Ryan Sessegnon at Tottenham.

“Emerson Royal has done better in the last couple of months but he is not hit the heights we expected,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“As for the lad from Forest, I’m not sure he would command a starting spot straight away. That would be one for the future a little bit like when Sessegnon came in.

“He would be a signing with the future in mind. Spurs have always been good at doing that.

“I don’t think he’d make a huge difference straight away though. He is definitely a very good, promising player.

“I think it would be a big ask for him to come in and start 35-odd games next season and play in the Premier League.

“Do Spurs need to shop in the Championship? Yes, there is players like Bowen in the Championship but Spurs should be shopping in a different market now.”
