Tottenham dealt major blow over England international - report

By Dominic Toner

Liverpool are set to offer midfielder Adam Lallana a new contract to fend off interest from Tottenham, according to a report.

The Express claim that the Merseyside club are set to double Lallana’s contract and offer him a new £120,000-a-week deal to stay at Anfield.

It is understood that Liverpool are keen to secure the future of the 28-year-old after Spurs and French giants Paris Saint-Germain showed their interest in him.

The report details that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to reunite with Lallana after they previously worked together at Southampton but the Londoners are set for a major blow to their transfer ambitions.

Lallana has been in immaculate form this season and has thrived on playing as a central midfielder.

Jurgen Klopp has slotted the England international into his three-man midfield and he has been crucial to their success this season.

Lallana has made 19 appearances across all competitions this campaign, scoring seven goals and supplying seven assists.

The midfielder is regarded as one of the most technically gifted players at Anfield and Liverpool are keen to secure his long-term future.

The Reds are currently second-placed in the Premier League table and Lallana has been an ever present in their strong domestic form.

Football Insider verdict:

Spurs would have to pay a huge sum to sign a player of Lallana’s qualities and a deal for him now seems impossible. Liverpool would not see the appeal of selling to a title rival and especially a player that has been so influential this season. Lallana would slot into the strong English core already at White Hart Lane and it would be a huge bonus for the national team. However, a new improved contract offer for the midfielder should secure Lallana’s future and Spurs will be forced to look elsewhere. The north London club do have powerful midfield enforcers in Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, but could perhaps do with a bit more creativity in the centre.

In other Tottenham transfer news, the club’s midfielder has revealed that Pochettino refused to send him out on loan.
