Manchester United are set to beat Tottenham to the signing of Burnley centre-back Michael Keane, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims United are the clear favourites to sign the 24-year-old and are set to re-sign him for £25million, just two years after selling him to Burnley for £2million.
The report states Keane is “desperate” for a return to his former club, and the club still have a 25 per cent sell-on clause in his deal at Burnley, so they would have to pay less than any of their rivals for him.
Liverpool were also very interested in his signature, according to the Sun.
Keane has impressed in the Premier League this term and would reportedly quadruple his £25,000-a-week wages with a move to Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old has been a mainstay of Burnley’s backline this term and has made 39 appearances in all competitions.
Football Insider verdict
It always seemed likely that Keane would opt to stay in Lancashire with a move to his former club, rather than moving to London, and now it seems like it’s only a matter of time. It will no doubt be a miss for Pochettino, but in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, he already has two top class central defenders, who Keane would be unlikely usurp. Spurs are also interested in Harry Maguire and Ben Gibson as back-ups for their first-choice defenders according to various reports, so a move for one of them may well be a better option than entering a bidding war with United for Keane.
