Tottenham’s hopes of signing Burnley striker Andre Gray have received a massive boost as the club stalls on a new contract offer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the club may be ready to cash in on their prize asset, who has one year left on his contract.
Reportedly, no new contract offer has been made to the player – despite the club turning down a £15million offer in the January window from West Ham.
The report also states a new deal at Turf Moor would not significantly increase Gray’s reported £30,000-a-week wages.
On top of the contract claims, Gray has been benched in three of Burnley’s last four games, with Sean Dyche opting to play Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes ahead of him.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Gray revealed discussions over his future would take place this summer.
“It’s always been a matter of getting the season out of the way,” he said.
“We had a big job to do and it’s something that we didn’t want to get in between the season and contract talks. It will get sorted at the end of the season I’m sure.”
The 25-year-old has been in decent form this campaign for the Claret and Blues, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions.
Football Insider verdict
Burnley’s refusal to significantly increase Gray’s wages, allied to the fact that he’s not making the first XI at the tail end of the season, will come as music to Tottenham’s ears. It’s surprising that his club are not willing to offer him a pay-rise, given they have previously refused to sell their marquee player, but with just one year left on his contract it could be time for Gray to move on. If Spurs can sign him he would add to an already talented squad and they need back-up to Kane up top. He won’t be the first choice striker, but he’ll be aware that Spurs are set to challenge on a number of fronts next season, and he won’t be short of opportunity. He will have aspirations of playing at the highest level and this could be his best chance to showcase his obvious talent.
In other Tottenham transfer news, they would be unstoppable if they sign this Champions League ace.
