Tottenham expected 3-5-2 v Man City after Vertonghen ruled out

By Dominic Toner

Tottenham are expected to make one change to their starting line-up against Manchester City following the injury to Jan Vertonghen.

The 29-year-old was forced off in Spurs’ 4-0 victory over West Brom at the weekend with an ankle injury.

Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur claims that Vertonghen could be out for “around two months” and that means he will definitely miss the crucial fixture with Man City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to make just the one forced change and bring Ben Davies into the defence to replace Vertonghen.

The 23-year-old is likely to get the nod ahead of team-mate Kevin Wimmer in defence and will slot into a back three alongside Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier.

Spurs will field their strongest available side against title rivals Man City and will keep the core of the side that have won the last seven consecutive games across all competitions, but will be without talisman Vertonghen.

Hugo Lloris is set to continue in goal ahead of Michel Vorm and Spurs have conceded just three goals in their last seven matches.

Pochettino has to choose between Davies and Wimmer to replace Vertonghen as he is set to continue with the effective three-man backline.

Davies is set to get the nod as he has experience of playing in a back three for nation Wales and has been preferred to over Wimmer for the bench in recent weeks.

Spurs are expected to remain unchanged everywhere else on the pitch, meaning wing-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose will hope to cause Man City major problems down the flanks.

Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are set to partner each other in midfield, with Chrisitan Eriksen give a more free role to support the attack.

England internationals Harry Kane and Dele Alli are likely to lead the attack and the pair have been in great form in front of goal this season.

They have scored a combined 26 goals between them this campaign across all competitions and are enjoying Pochettino’s 3-5-2 system.
