Tottenham expert has ‘big concerns’ after Sergio Reguilon latest

Alan Hutton has insisted he has “big concerns” about the state of the Tottenham defence just days away from the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

The former Spurs and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the bulk of the remaining transfer budget must be directed to improving the club’s rearguard.

Postecoglou, who is expected to transition to a four-man defence, currently has Sergio Reguilon, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Emerson Royal, Pedro Porro and Djed Spence to choose from in the full-back areas.

According to the Daily Mail (30 July), Reguilon is a target for Real Sociedad after his season-long loan at Atletico Madrid last term.

Djed Spence has also been widely linked with an exit from Spurs this summer after being shipped out to Rennes on loan last season.

Tottenham have made two defensive signings so far in the off-season – adding Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven and Blackburn youngster Ashley Phillips to Postecoglou’s squad.

He told Football Insider: “It’s an interesting one.

We know that Ange Postecoglou likes to play with inverted full-backs – is Reguilon the guy who can do that?

“Can he bomb forward but also put the hard yards in defensively? I’m not sure.

“I think it’s going to be a big area of concern for the manager. I think defensively is where Spurs have struggled.

“If Reguilon leaves, who will play there? I honestly don’t know. I think Spurs need reinforcements in that area.

If there is more money in the budget, that’s where I think the bulk of it will go. Right-back, left-back, centre-back – three areas which need improvement, because it’s where a lot of the problems have come from.”
