Tottenham fans react on Twitter after Dele Alli is labelled a cheat by Poll

By Emma Sanders

Tottenham fans have defended Dele Alli on Twitter after the midfielder was accused of diving against Swansea during Spurs’ 5-0 victory on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was awarded a penalty when Jon Moss deemed a clash with Kyle Naughton worthy of a foul in the box but Alli has been criticised for diving following the incident.

In his column for the Daily Mail, former Premier League referee Graham Poll claimed Alli should have been shown a yellow card for diving and Moss was wrong to award Tottenham a penalty.

“These incidents are hard to judge at full speed but as Moss was clearly unsure he really should not have awarded a penalty. I would like to see retrospective action for these dives – it is cheating and deserving of a three-match ban,” said Poll.

The penalty was awarded in the 39th minute when the team were still level and the deadlock was yet to be broken but Harry Kane duly dispatched the spot kick.

Son Heung-Min quickly followed up Kane’s opener to give Tottenham a 2-0 lead at half-time before Christian Eriksen scored a brace in the second half and Kane added another.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were well on top prior to the penalty decision and though it was made clear afterwards that Alli had dived, Tottenham fans supported the midfielder, claiming there were worse incidents that occurred throughout the weekend.

Sergio Aguero was sent off following a horrific tackle against David Luiz but the Chelsea man arguably could have been sent off prior to that following a deliberate pull-back in a one-on-one situation.
