Tottenham Hotspur could have everything riding on their last game of the season against Everton, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Everton chief executive, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, thinks the relegation battle could go down to the wire.

Spurs announced former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager on Tuesday, after sacking interim boss Igor Tudor last week.

The north London club require an immediate new manager bounce, with just seven Premier League games remaining, and just one point separating them and the bottom three.

Spurs’ next Premier League match is at Sunderland, and the Black Cats have only lost three times in the league at home all season.

Tottenham have ‘mountain to climb’ in relegation fight

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – is not predicting Spurs to pick up any points against Sunderland.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the fans have “done their best” to support the team, but that belief is fading.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, it’s seven games to go with Spurs, and it’s not going to go well I don’t think.

“Sunderland is their next match, which is going to give them a real mountain to climb with six games to go afterwards.

“Meanwhile, you’ve got look at West Ham at home to Wolves, and you’ve got to think that West Ham have got a better chance of getting something out of that game.

“That leaves us with very few games, and we’re counting down to the end then. The last game of the season is Everton at Spurs and that could be interesting to see whether Everton actually are going to be qualifying for a European place, or are Spurs going to go down.

“There could be quite a lot on that game, so we’ll have to watch how that could end up, but for Spurs right now there is a lot of pressure, obviously. I see the fans have tried to rally round doing the coach welcome and the sort of things that we’ve done at Everton.

“And the fans have done their best to rally round, but bad results break the back of the fans’ belief and hope of support. It’s a very difficult time for them right now.”

Tottenham’s owners must make financial pledge

Spurs losing their Premier League status will have a huge blow on the club’s finances, with matchday and broadcast revenue failing in the Championship.

Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Spurs’ owners would have to put their hands in their pockets to cover the losses.

The club’s transfer plans are also at a standstill due to uncertainty over which league they will be in next season.

Regardless, Spurs face losing star players, and the next manager at the club will be busy in the transfer market to rebuild the squad.
