Tottenham fans pan senior player as a liability after defeat to Liverpool
By Harry Sykes
Tottenham fans took to Twitter to tear into Eric Dier in the wake of their team’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.
Two Sadio Mane goals knocked the stuffing out of Spurs as the home side produced a captivating display in the first half of the Anfield clash.
Mane brushed aside the attention of Ben Davies to seize on a Georginio Wijnaldum through ball for the opener and, 138 seconds later, doubled Liverpool’s advantage after Dier had failed to control a hopeful long pass.
Second-placed Tottenham never threatened to mount a comeback as Liverpool comfortably controlled the second period to secure the three points.
Spurs fans seized upon the error by Dier and took to social media to universally describe the centre-back as a liability.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Dier played the full 90 minutes of the clash at Anfield at centre-back as he stood in once again for the injured Jan Vertonghen and lined up alongside Toby Alderweireld.
The 23-year-old has been a mainstay of the Spurs side this season, although he has been principally used in defence rather than in the midfield anchorman role of the last campaign.
The win for Liverpool helped them climb to within a point of Spurs as the battle for the top four places intensified.
The gap between Tottenham in second and Manchester United in sixth now stands at just two points.
In other Tottenham news, a £38.5million ace has held talks with Spurs and held a meeting with Pochettino at the club’s training headquarters.
