Toby Alderweireld has posted a Twitter message hailing Tottenham’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Juventus – and fans have urged him to sign a new contract and get fit for the second leg at Wembley.
The Belgium international was omitted from the matchday squad and left behind in London as manager Mauricio Pochettino insisted he needed to work on his fitness after only recently recovering from a serious hamstring injury.
Alderweireld’s omission for Tottenham’s biggest match of the season to date perplexed many fans and prompted speculation it could be related to his contract stalemate with the hierarchy.
Nevertheless, the centre-back, 28, took to his personal Twitter account to hail “a good away result from the boys” and stated he was “looking forward” to the second leg, which takes place on 7 March at Spurs’ temporary home.

Tottenham fans replied to Alderweireld’s Tuesday night Twitter post by urging him to return to the team, calling for the centre-back to “hurry back” and strengthen the back line.
Others used the opportunity to persuade the Belgium international to sign a contract extension that will keep him at the club way beyond his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2019.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Shows what the supposed journo’s know, top attitude Toby, looking forward to seeing you play in the return leg.

Tottenham initially appeared to miss Alderweireld in the first leg in Turin on Tuesday night as they conceded two penalties in the first half, one of which was missed, and were 2-0 down inside 10 minutes during a frenzied opening.
But Pochettino’s side fought back in impressive style and their dominance was reflected in excellent goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.
Alderweireld will hope to make just his second appearance since the start of November when Tottenham travel to League One outfit Rochdale on Sunday for their FA Cup fifth round match.
The player has insisted in recent interviews that he is fully fit and feeling no after-effects on the hamstring tear he suffered against Real Madrid.
