Tottenham fans react on Twitter to Defoe performance for England against Lithuania

By Amir Mir

Jermain Defoe marked his return to the England squad by scoring against Lithuania during a World Cup qualifier – and Tottenham fans on Twitter were pleased for the striker.

The 34-year-old struck early in the first-half during the 2-0 win against the international minnows at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling brushed off his opponent on the left-hand side and delivered a simple cross from the byline which was duly dispatched by Defoe.

He was then substituted on the hour mark with his replacement Jamie Vardy doubling his side’s lead which made sure of all three points.

It was Defoe’s first goal for the national side in over four years after a lengthy absence from the senior team.

Defoe has been in red hot form for Sunderland this season despite the Black Cats sitting bottom of the Premier League table.

Nonetheless, it was the Spurs supporters who were lauding their former player for once again finding the back of the net.

Many hailed his performance and were just glad to see him make a return to the national set-up by scoring.

Furthermore, others stated that they wouldn’t mind having Defoe back at White Hart Lane because they feel he can still produce the goods.

One fan believes there is not a better backup option currently in the Spurs squad with summer signing Vincent Janssen struggling for form.

Overall, the White Hart Lane faithful congratulated Defoe for his England goal and were adamant that he would still do a job for the Champions League chasers.
