Tottenham fans react to Edwards display for England Under-19s

By Harry Sykes

Marcus Edwards scored for England Under-19s in their 5-1 win over Belarus on Monday – and Tottenham fans took to Twitter to hail the emerging star.

Edwards, 18, was named in the starting X1 and was key to a convincing performance by Keith Downing’s side as England rounded off their European Under-19 Championship Elite Round qualifying campaign in style.

The team, who had already secured their place in this summer’s finals in Georgia prior to kick-off, fell behind to an early Vladislav Mukhamedov strike at St. George’s Park.

But the visitors’ lead did not last long as Manchester City duo Lukas Nmecha and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts fired the Young Lions in front midway through the first half.

England ran riot after the break with Edwards on hand to extend their comfortable lead before Chris Willock secured the victory with a well-taken double late on.

Edwards is highly rated at Tottenham, where he has been training regularly this season with the first-team squad and has been compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs fans are extremely excited by the young playmaker and were pleased he had made an impact for the national team.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Edwards has made just a single appearance for Spurs to date, which came in the League Cup in September against third-tier side Gillingham.

In other Tottenham news, a proven Premier League performer has revealed how the deal was done for him to move to White Hart Lane until a last-minute change.
