'Pure class', 'Absolutely immense' - Spurs fans rave about one player despite FA Cup heartbreak
Manchester United knocked Tottenham out of the FA Cup on Saturday at Wembley as they came from behind to end the club’s chance of silverware for yet another year, but Spurs fans were still quick to praise Jan Vertonghen.
The North Londoners haven’t won a trophy since their League Cup success back in 2007/08 season, but there was a feeling that this was their year to finally end the shut out.
And it looked liked it would happen.
Spurs opened the scoring after a suberb pass cut out the United backline down the Lillywhites right to Christian Eriksen, who ran forward and crossed a pinpoint effort into the path of Dele Alli.
The England international ran at pace into the box and connected to put Mauricio Pochettino’s side ahead in the 11th minute.
It was little more than the North Londoners deserved after they came out of the blocks and put United under a great deal of pressure from the off.

United were off their game on the whole and struggled to get any flow to their rhythm until Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez combined in the 24th minute for the former Arsenal player to head across Michel Vorm in place of Hugo Lloris into the back of the net.
The second-half was a different affair altogether as United dominated and when Ander Herrera fired low under Vorm to give the Red Devils the lead, it came as no surprise.
Despite the result, it didn’t stop the Lillywhites faithful from lauding their defender, Vertonghen, who has been imperious throughout the campaign.
And that in spite of being without his usual centre-back partner Toby Alderweireld for some time.
Here is a selection of Twitter reactions from Spurs fans to the display of the Belgian international:
Vertonghen the positive so far, as always. Son the negative for me. First touch has been pretty poor in some key positions.

Vertonghen has dealt with lukaku every single time the 1 time Sanchez does he loses the battle and we concede I'm sorry but he is not good enough

Vertonghen been excellent, strong and always in control. dictating situations to have the upper hand on Lukaku. Davies too on the ground but Lukaku has him aerially.
