Robert Pires has urged Arsenal to sign Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama

Tottenham began their pre-season campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest behind closed doors.

Victor Wanyama made his debut in a side that mixed first-team players with a scattering of academy players, and took to Twitter to let fans know he was glad to have played his first game.

Heung-min Son, Tom Carroll and Alex Pritchard were the scorers for Tottenham as they ensured a solid start to Spurs’ preparations for the new season.

The Spurs players that played at Euro 2016 are yet to return for pre-season, so the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Danny Rose didn’t play, while goalkeeper Hugo Lloris plays for France in the final on Sunday night.

It has been an active but not terribly productive transfer period for Spurs, who have missed out on signing Michy Batshuayi who joined Chelsea, while Antonio Sanabria looks set to choose Real Betis.

However, Mauricio Pochettino has been able to make the marquee signing of Wanyama and is set to sign Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar in the near future for around £18.8million.

Spurs have also been linked with an incredible move to bring Mario Gotze to White Hart Lane, a suggestion that instantly caused their fans to go into Twitter meltdown.

In other Tottenham news, their former ace has suffered a set back in his fight to beat illness.
