Tottenham fans took to Twitter to hail Toby Alderweireld for a polished comeback performance in their team’s 2-0 FA Cup fourth round replay win against Newport County on Wednesday night.
The Belgium international played the full 90 minutes of the Wembley clash after being selected for the first time since breaking down with a hamstring injury at the start of November.
Alderweireld, 28, has been back in training for a few weeks but manager Mauricio Pochettino held off on rushing him back into the first team after such a long absence.
The centre-back was part of a dominant display by the home side, lining up in defence alongside rookie Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier and Danny Rose, who was making his first appearances since Boxing Day.
An early Dan Butler own goal and Erik Lamela’s first of the season helped Tottenham to cruise to victory and book their passage in the fifth round of the cup, where they will face League One outfit Rochdale.
Tottenham fans on social media are delighted to see Alderweireld back and looking like he had never been away.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Lamela is back! What an effort he put in!
Nice to Toby pinging perfectly weighted balls around again.
I blame the lack of hair on Llorente’s head & face for the missed chances#COYS

Toby is absolutely the rock of our backline. With Jan in fine form, the two could be even better than last year if they stay fit. #COYS

Wembley isn’t quite as big as it looks on TV.
Decent game, good to see Toby back! #COYS

Great to see Spurs through to the 5th round of the FA cup. The good positives to take from tonight is seeing Toby, Lamela and Winks getting 90 mins of football under their belts #COYS
