Tottenham are reportedly set to step up their interest in Schalke playmaker Max Meyer this summer – and the club’s supporters are very excited about a potential deal on Twitter.

The Sun have claimed that the 21-year-old has told the Bundesliga club that he does not want to sign a new deal with them, with just one year remaining on his existing contract.

It is understood that Spurs have been alerted to his situation and are long-term admirers of the German.

The report details that they were quoted a £39million asking price by Schalke last summer for Meyer, but he could now be made available for just £17.5million and Mauricio Pochettino is keen on securing a deal.

Meyer has been eyed by scouts of the north London club during the Under-21s European Championship this summer as he looks to guide Germany’s youth side to success.

Spurs fans have raved about the qualities of the attacking midfielder and feel he would be a smart addition to their squad.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Meyer is a skilful player that usually operates in the number 10 role and can also be used anywhere across the frontline.

The Germany Under-21 international is believed to be a good fit for the Spurs policy and would provide competition for the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son, Moussa Sissoko and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou if he joined.

He already has 164 senior appearances under his belt for German club Schalke and has proved his qualities going forward.

Meyer has managed 21 goals and supplied 23 assists in return, but is only going to improve as he develops.

In other Tottenham transfer news, they have tabled an offer for a 23-year-old defender.
