Tottenham among frontrunners to land two-time Ligue 1 winner – report
By Aramide Oladipo
Tottenham are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier during the summer transfer window, according to a report.
ESPN reports that the North London club are one of the frontrunners to secure the signature of the 24-year-old.
A source close to the French outfit informed the sports outlet that PSG are prepared to sell the full-back this summer and they are looking to receive between £18million and £22million for him.
The report claims that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino sees the Ivorian as the perfect candidate to replace Kyle Walker who has joined Premier League rivals Manchester City.
It is said that Spurs face stiff competition as fellow Premier League side Manchester United and Italian giants Inter Milan are also in the hunt to sign the defender this summer.
Both English sides are reportedly cautious about making a move for Aurier due to his off-field behaviour as he is currently appealing a two-month prison sentence for allegedly attacking a police officer in 2016.
It is reported that the Ligue 1 side want to sanction a move for the defender once a decision has been made over Aurier’s appeal.
The full-back has enjoyed great success during his time with the club from the French capital, playing an important role in helping them securing back-to-back league titles from 2014-2016.
The defender has contributed with five goals and 15 assists throughout his career with PSG.
Aurier currently has two years remaining on his contract with the French side.
Football Insider verdict
Aurier is the type of player who could easily fit into Tottenham’s style of play under manager Mauricio Pochettino. The defender is very attack-minded and he would be the perfect candidate to fill the void left by Kyle Walker. The Ivorian could also provide a winning mentality to the side following his recent success at club level and on the international scene as he was part of the Ivory Coast squad to win the African Cup of Nations two years ago. For a player with vast top flight and Champions League experience, not to mention two years left on his contract, £22million is fairly cheap in this current market and Spurs must do everything they can to bring him to North London next season.
