Tottenham have dropped Djed Spence hint after 'surprising' development - Robinson

Paul Robinson is “surprised” Tottenham summer signing Djed Spence did not feature against AS Roma.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one is now adamant the 21-year-old will miss out on the starting XI against Southampton on Saturday.

Spence was an unused substitute on Saturday as Spurs lost their final pre-season game to AS Roma.

As quoted by Football.London (31 July), Antonio Conte claimed the wing-back “has to work a lot” over the coming weeks.

Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in a £20million last month.

The right-back put pen to paper on a five-year contract in north London.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Spence’s lack of minutes at the weekend, Robinson said: “I’m surprised by that.

“There might be a couple of reasons as to why he didn’t.

“I am a big believer that you cannot read much into pre-season games. The competitive edge is not there. The manager tends to rotate frequently. It is almost like internationals.

“Conte’s selection on the first game of the season will be the first true sign of what his plans are for the season.

“That being said, the fact that Djed Spence did not feature at all against Roma, the last game before the start of the season, suggests to me that he will not be starting.

“It is almost guaranteed that he won’t start against Southampton.”
