Tottenham insider delivers verdict on ‘chaotic’ transfer window

Tottenham made nine signings during the summer transfer window, but there business has been described as “chaotic”.

Thomas Frank was appointed Spurs manager after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou during the window.

Frank has made a promising start to life in north London, with two wins from their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Spurs though threw away a two-goal lead against PSG in the Super Cup and suffered a shock loss to Bournemouth to highlight there are still flaws in the squad.

Tottenham’s transfer window assessed

Following the conclusion of the transfer window executive chairman Daniel Levy stepped down from his position at Spurs amid talk of a takeover, although the club insist it is not for sale.

As per Alasdair Gold, football.london [11 September], Spurs’ transfer window has not addressed every area of the squad.

“Chaotic with some high profile misses,” Gold summarised.

“The club eventually brought in some real quality only to still be lacking in some areas.

“Key for me was that they made four signings that could all improve the starting XI rather than signing simply youngsters for the future or squad players.

“That’s a big improvement in one respect but we’ll find out by Christmas whether it was enough.”

Spurs were hijacked by Arsenal for Eberechi Eze and Nottingham Forest refused to let Morgan Gibbs-White depart, two top targets.

Frank also wanted Cristian Norgaard from his old club Brentford, before he joined nearest rivals Arsenal.

Xavi Simons could make up for lost transfers

One signing Spurs did get across the line was Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, who Chelsea were also pursuing.

With injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski it is perhaps the most important transfer Frank made all summer.

Simons arrives at Spurs with high potential and excellent technical ability, and at 22 could be a star for the future.

Spurs though need to get their top targets over the line in the first instance, and there are still positions in there squad which could be strengthened.

Amid Levy’s exit, a restructure of Spurs is happening which could impact future transfer windows and how the club operates.

Frank is an astute manager who should be backed by the club to deliver success, as there have already been signs of progress from the Postecoglou era.
