Tottenham place mega price tag on 23-year-old eyed by PL rivals – report

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham have put a mega £50million valuation on Eric Dier, who is being eyed by Manchester United, according to a report.

The Telegraph have claimed that the 23-year-old is on the list of targets who Jose Mourinho wants signed before the new season starts.

But, Spurs won’t let go of one of their regular starters without a fight and have placed a massive price-tag on him.

It is detailed that the valuation is more than United themselves expected to pay for the versatile England international.

However, Mourinho does also see him as the long-term replacement for former Tottenham star Michael Carrick, meaning he may splash out the money needed to acquire Dier, who still has four years left on his contract in north London.

The Old Trafford giants current hold the world record transfer spend after bringing in Paul Poga for £89million from Juventus last summer, while they have already brought in defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica for £30million this window.

Dier played in 48 matches for Tottenham in all competitions last season and despite not being considered one of the stars of the team he proved a key part in the way Mauricio Pochettino’s team played.

Football Insider verdict:

Dier is definitely the most expendable member of the Tottenham first team due to his limitations. He neither exceeds in the centre-back or defensive midfield positions, but if he does leave then this will show that Tottenham first team players are still in danger of being poached by “bigger” clubs. Spurs have made huge progress in recent years and while they will most certainly keep hold of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, if they can’t keep the core they may find that it is harder to achieve a second placed finish. Additionally, Pochettino may even look elsewhere if he can’t keep hold of his key members.
