Tottenham news: Daniel Levy may be plotting ‘spectacular’ Spurs signing after source reveal – pundit

Alex McLeish has suggested Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may be plotting a “spectacular” signing this summer after a lack of business in January.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Spurs chief has not “gone over the top” in terms of new additions in recent years.

Spurs signed Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus during the January window, the latter on loan.

A Spurs source told Football Insider last month (24 January) Conte wanted four new additions and was putting “huge” pressure on Levy to get deals done.

The Italian boss was very public with his desire for new signings to bolster his side.

However, McLeish, who took over as Rangers manager when Levy was on the club’s board, suggested Spurs may be waiting to pull off a high-profile signing this summer.

“I’ve not seen any comments from Conte so far,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“But you could see two or three weeks before him saying we do have to improve it and build and get other players in.

“Whether he’s thinking less is more? If Spurs fans are thinking: ‘We should have had four or five other players,’ then think back to that team when they sold Gareth Bale.

“I think sometimes less is more. Conte has made a decent start but, as we’ve always said, Daniel Levy hasn’t gone over the top in terms of signings over the years.

“One of the examples was Jose Mourinho coming in. I’ve never heard Mourinho saying something like he did when he said: ‘I’m going to delve into the academy because we’ve got a lot of good young players.’

“Reading between the lines, I’m saying he’s probably not getting any money to spend. True enough, that proved to be correct.

“Daniel Levy is a pretty shrewd guy and he might be waiting on signing that one spectacular player this summer. His manager could be in cahoots with him and on the same page.

“It’s great when the chairman and the manager are on the same page.”

Bentancur, a defensive midfielder, has signed a four-year deal at Spurs.

Meanwhile, winger Kulusevski has joined on an 18-month loan with a view to a permanent deal.

In other news, pundit claims one man’s “disastrous” Tottenham career is over after “attitude” problems.
