Tottenham news: This may be real reason Conte let Giovani Lo Celso leave Spurs after source reveal – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Giovani Lo Celso’s inability to nail down a defined role in the Tottenham squad led to his deadline day exit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender admitted he does not know what the 25-year-old’s best position is in the middle of the park.

As confirmed on Monday (31 January), Lo Celso has joined Villareal on loan for the rest of the season.

A Spurs source told Football Insider last week (24 January) Antonio Conte gave the Argentine the green light to leave after growing frustrated at his inability to follow tactical instructions.

Hutton suggested a lack of definitive position may also have led to the midfielder’s exit.

Asked where Lo Celso’s best position is, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Great question.

“He’s one of these guys where I’m not sure. Is he a number eight, does he play number six, is he a number 10? Does he play out wide?

“I think he’s kind of been a little bit of everything. We’ve seen flashes of him in different positions.

“But he’s never been that go-to guy where he’s the first name on the team sheet where you know he’s going to be a creative player, a goal scorer, a ball winner.

“We don’t really know. He’s been here quite a long time now and still, I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe that’s how Antonio Conte sees him as well.”

Lo Celso played seven times under Conte at Spurs.

He has a total of 84 appearances under his belt for the Lilywhites.
