Tottenham are plotting a bid for Torino left-back Antonio Barreca, according to a report.
Italian news outlet Tutto Mercato Web claims on their website that Roma and Ligue 1 champions Monaco are also in the race to land the 22-year-old, who was in hot form for Torino last season.
It is understood that Spurs could make an offer for the Italian defender in order to beat off the competition coming from Roma and Monaco, who unlike the London club have already bolstered their squads ahead of next season.
Spurs are the only team in the Premier League yet to announce the arrival of a new player despite seeing several players leave including Kyle Walker, who has recently secured a big-money move to Manchester City.
Although Barreca is traditionally a left-back, he can also play on the opposite side of a back-four and could be used as a back-up option for Kieran Trippier next season.
Mauricio Pochettino is already well-stocked in the left-back department with Danny Rose and Ben Davies among his ranks while as it stands academy product Kyle Walker-Peters is the potential understudy of Trippier.
Former Italy Under-21 international Barreca featured 30 times across all competitions for Torino last season, supplying two assists while mainly playing at left-back.
Football Insider Verdict
Tottenham really do not need another left-back this summer as Rose and Davies are perhaps two of the leading players in that areas in the Premier League. If Pochettino wanted to eye up a new right-back to replace Walker, then he has to scope out someone who naturally plays in that position. It would be a bit of a waste of time in snapping up a player who is going to be used outside their comfort zone, and that is why Tottenham should avoid signing Barreca. He looks like a real talent and could be a star in the future, but he simply isn’t the right player for Pochettino at this moment in time.
