Tottenham ready to bomb Steven Bergwijn out after source’s reveal – pundit

Antonio Conte is ready to force Steven Bergwijn out of Tottenham, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League forward suggested Conte has seen enough of Bergwijn to know he is not part of his long-term plans.

A Spurs source told Football Insider last week (21 June) that the 24-year-old is in advanced talks to join Ajax but the club will not budge on their £26million asking price.

Ajax want to make the Netherlands international their marquee signing and Tottenham are open to selling.

He has fallen down the pecking order with the arrival of Dejan Kulesevski and he managed just one Premier League start in 2022.

“I do believe he’s got a role to play at Tottenham,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But when a manager comes in they assess a player and if they don’t feel they need him, especially Conte, he’s not going to hold onto a player and collect players knowing he’s not going to use them and they’re not his cup of tea.

“I think it’s very straightforward. If you’ve not got a purpose at the club, then he’ll bomb you out and allow you to leave, and use that money elsewhere to get players who are his players because he is not his player.

“He was bought before Conte came in. He’s had enough time to look at players, see what he needs, see what he wants, what sort of mentality and style of player he wants.

“Bergwijn is still a tender age, very young and his best football is still ahead of him.

“For his international chances as well, I think he needs to be playing more regularly.”
