Marcus Edwards scored a fine goal on his comeback for Tottenham Under-23s on Sunday – and supporters took to Twitter to hail the academy sensation.

Edwards, who turned 18 in December, made his return at Anfield against Liverpool’s development side after being absent since October with an ankle injury.

He scored the opening goal with an impressive left-footed finish after 18 minutes across the goalkeeper in the Premier League 2 clash.

Nathan Oduwa put Spurs’ youngsters 2-0 ahead but Harry Wilson pulled one back from the penalty spot before second-half goals from Sheyi Ojo and Kevin Stewart secured the win for Liverpool.

Spurs fans were excited at the return of academy sensation Edwards and predicted he will be fast-tracked into the senior team in the coming weeks.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The young playmaker has a burgeoning reputation at White Hart Lane and is widely hailed as the most exciting of the next generation of talent emerging from within the club.

Edwards, who was with the Spurs first team that beat Middlesbrough on Saturday and disembarked from the team coach that arrived at White Hart Lane only to be omitted from the matchday squad for the Premier League clash.

Josh Onomah and Cameron Carter-Vickers were unused substitutes on Saturday and joined Edwards in the side that lost to Liverpool’s youngsters 24 hours later.

Tottenham fans have high hopes for Edwards, who has been likened to a young Lionel Messi by his manager due to his left-footed dribbling and technical ability.

The teenager was handed his senior Spurs debut as a second-half substitute in their 5-0 League Cup win over Gillingham in September, 24 hours after being hailed as a potential great by Pochettino.

“He [Edwards] is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player but now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Telegraph. “And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”
