Tottenham are eyeing a move for Real Madrid midfielder Isco, according to a report.

The Mirror claims that Spurs were interested in signing the 24-year-old during the summer window, but he wanted to stay at the Bernabeu and fight for his place.

It is understood that Mauricio Pochettino is a huge fan of the attacking midfielder and Isco is currently considering his options after completing 90 minutes just twice under manager Zinedine Zidane, with his current contract set to expire in 2018.

The report details that Spurs are looking to strengthen their squad in January as they aim to compete for the Premier League title this season.

The north London club are currently fifth-placed in the table and have won their last three consecutive games, including an impressive 4-1 away victory at Southampton.

Pochettino’s side are still hopeful of competing for the title but they are currently 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, who have won their last 12 league games.

Isco is a long-term target for Spurs and they will try to take him to White Hart Lane in January to improve their title bid.

The Spain international has made 166 appearances for Madrid, scoring 24 goals and supplying 39 assists.

Football Insider verdict:

Spurs should try and convince Isco to join the club in January as he could drag them right into the title race. The north London club are most of the most consistent sides in the division, but just need an extra bit of quality to compete at the top. Harry Kane is the main source of goals and they currently have the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen chipping in, but could do with the extra creativity of Isco. The Spaniard has proven his qualities during his time and Madrid, but has never played in the Premier League before. The attacking midfielder fits the mould of a number 10 and several Spanish players have succeeded in England before, including David Silva and Juan Mata. Spurs would be sending out a huge message to the rest of the league if they could persuade Isco to join them in January and would stand a better chance of winning the title.
