Tottenham news: Chris Sutton shares unexpected Ange Postecoglou sack claim

Tottenham should not sack manager Ange Postecoglou despite poor results, according to Chris Sutton.

The former Celtic striker gave his thoughts on his podcast with Ian Ladyman It’s All Kicking Off! after being quizzed on Postecoglou’s future and made the unexpected claim that the manager should stay for now.

Following Spurs’ loss to Everton 3-2 on Sunday (19 January), the North London side are now 15th in the Premier League.

Postecoglou gave a spikey response in his post-match press conference after a reporter asked him about the “familiar story” of his team suffering defeat, Postecoglou’s response was: “Yeah, OK. A great way to start an interview.” [The Mirror]

That sarcastic answer, and the team’s miserable form, have led to many Spurs fans calling for the Australian to be sacked, Sutton said on the podcast (10.45): “Because of the ‘overachievement’ last year, I think that Tottenham should stick with Postecoglou…there’s no getting away from the fact that he needs a couple of results, and a couple of results quickly!

“I think their next Premier League game at home to Leicester is a must win game for Postecoglou.”

Daniel Levy is unlikely to sack the Tottenham manager this season

Football Insider Verdict

Time is running out for Levy to make a decision on Postecoglou’s future. The Spurs owner realistically has until the end of the January transfer window, not sacking the Australian manager before then is a commitment in its own right.

However, with just under a fortnight to go, it seems unlikely that Postecoglou will be let go.

Despite rumblings online that the former Celtic boss could lose his job, Postecoglou seems to be well liked in North London.

Antonin Kinsky was brought in at the start of the window, due to Spurs’ dire need for a goalkeeper and there is an understanding that Postecoglou has been without large portions of his squad this season due to injury and suspension.

Spurs have also been linked with a surprise move for Man United star, Alejandro Garnacho, which would be a major boost to a weakened front-line.

Sutton’s comments speak to a wider view that, despite results this season, last season’s performances should buy the former Australian national team manager time to turn things around.

In other news, Spurs may be about to get a major defensive reinforcement.
