Alderweireld delivers critical update after injury blow v Real Madrid

By Russell Edge

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has said he is set to be out for the next couple of weeks after picking up an injury against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Belgian centre-back limped out of the game after just 24 minutes after clutching his hamstring following an attempted sprint, with the match at Wembley still finely poised at 0-0.

Thankfully for Spurs his absence did not affect their performance as they went on to dominate the title holders in their Champions League group match, Dele Alli scoring a double on the way to a 3-1 win, their first ever victory over Los Blancos.

However Alderweireld confirmed that he would be undergoing scans on the injury to assess the damage, stating he was still in discomfort after the game had finished, and that he expected to be out of action for at least a couple of weeks.

Speaking to ESPN, the 28-year-old said: “”It doesn’t feel very good, we’ll have to see in the next couple of days how it feels.

“Something happened, there’s no chance I could have played on. In the next couple of games, I’ll have a scan and we’ll take it from there.”

Meanwhile Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur quoted his fellow countryman as saying “I will be out for a few weeks” on his personal Twitter account.

The centre back’s absence will come as a huge blow to Mauricio Pochettino, having started all but one of the club’s fixtures across all competitions this season, and playing every minute of those games prior to his substitution on Wednesday.

Barring a miracle he will be missing when Spurs return to league action on Sunday, as they host basement club Crystal Palace at Wembley.
