Erik Lamela has been sent back to his former club Roma in an attempt to improve his ongoing injury situation.

The Tottenham star has flown back to Italy to work with physios at his old club who he trusts, though he has been accompanied by one of the Spurs medical staff too.

Mauricio Pochettino admitted the Argentine needed a “change” and he hopes by linking up with his former club he can iregain his fitness and return to Spurs to compete for a place in the squad.

“He went there [Roma] now. He needs to change a little bit the atmosphere. He has strong links in Rome. Not only he believes but we also believe that it’s important to change a little bit, and in his mind,” said Pochettino, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“He asked to finish his recovery time there and the club, us, the staff, we believe it’s right. We hope that after that period he will be available to train with the team again.”

Lamela has not featured for Tottenham since the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the EFL Cup in October and it seems he has struggled to regain fitness since suffering from a recurring hip injury.

The winger is highly-rated among staff at Tottenham and well-liked by supporters but he has not responded to treatment so this is the latest attempt by the club to find a solution.

The Spurs star has not featured in over two months and he has rarely trained with his teammates so concerns about his long-term future are now starting to creep in.

Lamela joined Tottenham for around £25million from Roma in August 2013 but he will now spend time with his former club until an improvement in his recovery can be seen.
