Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to ignite a double January swoop for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, according to a report.
The Express claim that Pochettino will look to bring in January reinforcements in a bid to get his side’s season back on track, with English stars Barkley and Shaw his main targets.
Spurs have long been linked with moves for both players, most recently with Barkley in the summer, and they are now ready to move for the 24-year-old midfielder in January.
Their main rivals for Barkley’s signature will once again be Chelsea, who saw a bid to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the summer fall at the last hurdle.
Barkley, who is just making his way back from a serious hamstring injury, is out of contract in the summer, and is also reportedly wanted by Arsenal and West Ham.
Left-sided flyer Shaw played under Pochettino at Southampton, and has struggled for game time at Manchester United since a gruesome leg break two years ago.
It is said that Jose Mourinho will sanction the sale of Shaw if United manage to secure the £25million signing of Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon, who is also a reported target for Tottenham.
Football Insider verdict:
If there were any touted January moves that do not come at all as a surprise, it is these two. Barkley was linked with Spurs throughout the whole summer window, and is said to prefer a move to north London over one to Stamford Bridge. He would offer Spurs a different kind of presence in midfield, and would further add to their young English contingent. Shaw is another who has been linked with Spurs in the past, and his move to the club would seemingly depend on several factors. Firstly, there is Sessegnon’s move to United, and then there is Danny Rose’s future at Spurs. Both will have a bearing on whether Shaw does indeed end up playing under Pochettino again, and that is a move which looks less likely to happen than the Barkley one.
