Danny Mills has claimed Jose Mourinho will look to sign a new Tottenham centre-back pairing next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and England defender suggested Toby Alderweireld may not have a role to play at Spurs next season.
Mourinho has not settled on a first-choice centre-back pairing all season with Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon all being given a chance to impress.
Currently, Alderweireld and Sanchez is his preferred duo and they have started the last three Premier League games together.
Spurs have conceded just one goal in that time when the Belgian was beaten to a header by Christian Benteke in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
Asked what he made of Mourinho’s defensive options, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Alderweireld, is next season going to be a season too far for him?
“We know that with Jose, his centre-back pairings have always been the key. At pretty much every single football club he’s been at, that’s what he’s been looking for.
“That’s one of the most crucial parts of his teams.
“We all can accept that this season he hasn’t quite trusted that centre-back pairing, it hasn’t quite been good enough.
“If Mourinho’s still there next season he’ll be looking to strengthen that centre-back pairing by either one or two new players.”
Tottenham spent the whole of the summer window looking for a new centre-back and after missing out on Milan Škriniar, they added Rodon on domestic deadline day.
The Wales international has made four Premier League starts but has not featured since January.
