Tottenham tipped to sign Gollini replacement in January after contract talks reveal – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Tottenham may sign a new backup goalkeeper to Hugo Lloris in the January transfer window.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Antonio Conte would want to recruit added competition or cover for Hugo Lloris.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday (11 December), Spurs have opened talks with the 34-year-old over a new contract.

His current terms expire at the end of the season but both parties are keen to extend his stay.

Spurs’ current backup goalkeeper is summer signing Pierluigi Gollini, who joined on loan with a view to buy from Atalanta.

Despite the Italian’s presence and Lloris’ contract talks, Hutton suggested Conte may still want to sign a new shot-stopper next month.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I still believe they have to look towards the future.

“They’ve got Gollini there, is he the answer? Look, he’s hardly played, so we’re not too sure.

“Are they going to bring somebody in during January or the summer that’s really going to challenge Lloris?

“It’s an interesting situation as to who they go for. Will they go for a number one or a number two?”

Spurs’ third-choice keeper is 22-year-old Brandon Austin.

As reported by Sky Sports in July, Spurs can turn Gollini’s stay permanent for £13million.

The 26-year-old has played eight times for Tottenham so far, although solely in the cup competitions.

As detailed by Football Insider back in September, Spurs have scouted West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone ahead of a potential move.
