Tottenham told to get Dele Alli 'off the wage bill' after latest - pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Tottenham to get Dele Alli “off the wage bill” during the January transfer window.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested Antonio Conte should give “younger, hungrier players” a chance to impress instead of the 25-year-old.
Alli fell firmly out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo and was an unused substitute for three of his final four league games in charge.
He did feature as a substitute in the Portuguese manager’s final game in charge as Spurs were beaten 3-0 by Manchester United.
The Lilywhites confirmed Conte’s appointment earlier this week.
However, he left Alli as an unused substitute for Thursday’s Europa Conference League tie against Vitesse Arnhem.

Despite the change of manager, Whelan insisted Spurs should still look at getting rid of the England international.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The biggest question is has he done enough? I think the answer to that, over the past two-and-a-half years, is no.
“I think there was a case where he could have been let go two years ago and last year. Now you’re looking at him and he’s been given opportunities.
“He hasn’t shone, he’s not the Dele Alli of old that was an absolute banker to start games. What he produced in assists, energy and goals, he seems to have lost the majority of that.
“You’ve probably got younger, hungrier players coming through that you’d put before Dele Alli.
“Come January will he still be there? Do Tottenham need him? I don’t think they need them.
“It might be good to cut loose and see if he can rekindle some of that footballing genius he had somewhere else. Get him off the wage bill.”
