Kieran Maguire tells Tottenham to spend big amid '£481m' reveal

The current Tottenham squad is worth less than half of some of their elite peers in the Premier League – they must spend big before they can match them on the pitch.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recent remarks from Antonio Conte about the gap between Spurs and the upper reaches of the top flight.

The Italian manager has led Spurs to within one point of the top four with two games to go this term, but they are 24 points behind league leaders Man City.

As quoted by The Athletic last Friday (6 May), Conte insisted that the north London club need to “spend a lot of money” or “hope for a miracle” if they are to fight for league titles.

Maguire revealed that Spurs’ squad, which was assembled for “£481million”, cost less than half of the likes of Man United, Man City and Chelsea.

“They have incurred substantial losses in the last two seasons but those are very much driven by Covid,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“So, in terms of financial fair play, there is certainly scope to push the spending.

“I can understand why Conte has said this. If you look at squad value, Man United’s is £980m, Man City at £975m, Chelsea at £959m. Spurs are way down at £481m.

“So the cost of Spurs’ squad is less than half of many of their peers. That is a huge gap to make up on your rivals, even with a top-class manager in charge.”

Spurs face Burnley and Norwich City in their final two matches this season.

Top-four rivals Arsenal meanwhile take on Newcastle United and Everton.
