Tottenham transfer news: Steven Bergwijn exit may be ‘in the pipeline’ after ‘warning’ – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested a summer move away from Tottenham could be “in the pipeline” for Steven Bergwijn.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested the 24-year-old may be unhappy with his “bit-part” role at Spurs.

Speaking to Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad (1 May) about his future, Bergwijn admitted he does not see himself playing regularly at Tottenham.

He went on to say “we will see in the summer what is best for both parties”.

Whelan admitted the Netherland international’s quotes were a “warning sign” for Spurs ahead of the summer.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “If he is not given the game he needs because he is an international playing for Holland, you’ve got the World Cup coming up, he needs to be playing regularly.

“He’s at the age now where he should be playing regularly, he’s got enough talent there to be playing.

“But again, a new manager comes in with different styles, different thoughts. It’s never easy. There’s no guarantee that you are going to be playing week in, week out. They’ve got a really strong front line, you’ve got to force your way past a lot of good players.

“Is he happy just being a bit-part player? You can be if you are getting enough game time and you’ve got that belief from a manager and a player.

“You’ve got the player coming out and saying we’ll wait for the end of the season and assess it. Straightaway, there are warning signs that there could be something in the pipeline.

“If somebody comes in for him, I don’t think Conte will stand in his way. That goes to show that he’s not as important to Conte as a player. You need that confidence from a manager. I’m not surprised that he’s probably thinking about his future.”
