The agent of Jeremy Toljan has called Tottenham a “fantastic club” but insists that there have been no talks between the agency and the club.
Monday saw Portuguese newspaper Record Sport claim that Spurs were close to securing the capture of the 22-year-old Hoffenheim full-back, with Benfica also said to be in the running.
However the German defender’s agent, Ersin Akan, says that the agency representing the full-back has not been in contact with the club and that the reports of him making a move are just rumours at present.
He told Sky Sports News, as reported on the live transfer blog on their website (09:12, Wednesday 26 June): “Spurs are a fantastic club with an excellent progression in the last years, but we didn’t speak to the responsible persons.
“”It is always a pleasure to read big clubs like Tottenham are interested in Jeremy. For the moment, everything is a rumour.”
Toljan, a Germany Under-21 international with 17 caps to his name, broke into the Hoffenheim first team back in 2013, and has gone on to make 59 appearances for the club.
Last season saw him turn out 21 times across all competitions, as he found himself in and out of the starting XI as a result of rotation, as well as an injury which saw him sit out no less than six games.
Able to play on both the left and right hand side of defence, Toljan’s arrival would bring in competitions for the likes of Ben Davies, Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier, as manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to bring in his first signing of the summer.
Football Insider verdict
It appears that Tottenham are no closer to bringing the first signing of the summer through the doors, although as is so often the case with the club, fans should remain patient. Toljan seems like a useful signing, but is he the man to help them push on for a Premier League title and advance beyond the group stages of the Champions League? His European experience would help boost their chances, while the added competition would be good for the squad, but he is perhaps currently at best a squad player for Spurs. If they could secure him for a bargain deal, then they should make a move, but if the fee seems too high, they really should be considering other options.
In other Tottenham transfer news, this defender has made up his mind on his future amid reports of a reunion with the club.
