‘Can’t say anything just yet’ – Tottenham squad player reveals major ambitions
By Russell Edge
Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has revealed that he believes he is good enough to take part in next summer’s World Cup finals with England in Russia.
The 21-year-old made his Three Lions debut on Sunday, starting in a 1-0 victory away in Lithuania, with club team mate Harry Kane scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot.
It was an impressive debut from the youngster, showing impressive technique and ability in the centre of the park, including a shot which nearly ended up in the back of the net.
Having earned a taste of international football, Winks says that he feels he is good enough to be playing on the world stage, acknowledging that he must continue to perform for his club if he is to earn the right to play for his country.
He told the London Evening Standard: “I trust my ability and I believe I am good enough to play at this level.
“All I can do is perform for Tottenham and England if I get the opportunity and keep proving that.
“It is a long distance away. I can’t say anything just yet. I have just got to keep my head down and work hard.
“It [the World Cup] is something I dream of, of being able to say I have gone to but it is a long way away.”
Winks is beginning to establish himself as an important member of the Tottenham squad, although has still made just three starts out of his seven appearances this season.
Since breaking through the youth ranks at the North London club, he has made 43 appearances, scoring once and setting up a solitary assist, and is contracted to the club until 2022.
After finishing their qualification campaign, England have friendly matches lined up against international giants Germany and Brazil.
