Transfer expert shares big Liverpool update on reported Coutinho transfer

By Harry Sykes

Football journalist Kaveh Solhekol has provided a big update on Philippe Coutinho’s reported transfer to Barcelona.

Solhekol works for Sky Sports and is a regular source of accurate transfer information.

On Wednesday morning he posted a tweet to his official Twitter account that claimed Liverpool had received “no further contact of any kind from Barcelona about Philippe Coutinho since original enquiry almost three weeks ago.”

A lot of rumours have been flying around about the transfer over the past couple of days, with Mundo Deportivo reporting on Tuesday that Nou Camp representatives had flown to the UK to finalise a deal with the 25-year-old.

The Spanish media outlet claimed that Oscar Grau, the La Liga outfit’s director, had travelled to the club with director of football Raul Sanllehi and board executive Javier Bordas.

If Solhekol’s claims are true then this report can be entirely discounted.

It would also rubbish an earlier report from Mundo Deportivo that claimed Liverpool had countered Barcelona’s negotiations with a player-plus-cash offer.

It was reported that Liverpool wanted £90million for Coutinho, but failing that they proposed cash plus Portugal international Andre Gomes moving in the other direction.

Football Insider verdict:

Throughout all of this, the noises coming from manager Jurgen Klopp have been consistent – the player is not for sale. With the Premier League kicking off at the weekend it would be a disaster if Liverpool were to sell one of their star players now and a huge statement from the owners that money is more important than the Premier League title. It’s fair to say that if they go against Klopp’s wishes it could even cause a rift between them and the manager. What price that? We, and Liverpool fans, will be hoping this latest update is accurate and that Liverpool hold strong no matter what future contact comes from the Spanish giants.

In other Liverpool news, Steven Gerrard has said the club will finish above Manchester United if they do these two things.
